The purpose and mission of The Alfred Box of Books Library is to provide educational, cultural, and recreational resources to all members of the Alfred community. In partnership with SUNY Alfred State, the Library is developing the Alfred Youth Alliance, to provide resources, support and socialization to area youth. This is especially critical in an isolated, rural area with few opportunities for teens and young adults. Students from Alfred State, as well as Box of Books librarians, are hosting alliance meetings, sharing personal stories of growing up with few supports but nonetheless finding success. Libraries are safe places that appeal to disenfranchised youth and the Alfred Box of Books Library has committed to providing education, awareness, and a positive social outlet for the queer youth in the Alfred community.
